What subjects and grade levels do you teach? 5th and 6th grade Literacy

What is your educational or professional background? MA, Applied Linguistics

What inspired you to become an educator? I love helping people learn, and I love language. I first taught people who were learning English before I moved on to teaching literacy. There is a joy when someone makes connections they didn’t have before, and that motivates me.

How long have you been part of the Oak House community? This is my second year.

Why Oak House? The school has a specific need for literacy support, and I was invited to help.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Oak House? I love the kiddos.

What makes the Oak House community special to you? I love that I can bring ideas and they’re valued.

What is something you want every student to feel when they enter your classroom? Love.

What is one lesson, unit, or classroom project you especially enjoy teaching? I enjoy unpacking writing for students. There is a lot to writing. It can be a heavy load. I enjoy helping it feel lighter.

What is something your students have taught you? They’ve taught me what it looks like to do my best.

What do you hope students remember about your class after the school year ends? I want them to know that they were valued and that they can become the best readers and writers that they can be.

What do you enjoy doing outside of school? I like to bake, read, and eat chocolate.

What is a hobby, interest, or talent that students and families might be surprised to learn about you? I played the viola for many years.

What is one place you would love to visit? I would love to visit the island of Patmos.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off? I love snuggling with my dogs while reading a good book and sipping coffee.

Who is an educator, mentor, or historical figure who has influenced you? My mom was a preschool teacher. Every student knew she loved them, and every parent felt supported.
